General DIY Product Support

UcD™ amplifier modules are globally well-known and respected for their exceptional performance. To learn more about our UcD™ technology, please visit the Technology page.

NCORE® amplifier modules: NCORE® technology combines the stability of UcD™ with enhanced load-independence, lower distortion, and reduced output impedance. A new control loop increases the loop gain by 20dB across the entire audio range without compromising stability. NCORE® is the first Class-D amplifier to not only match the performance of the best linear amplifiers but to surpass them in every aspect relevant to sound quality.

An SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply) is a high-efficiency power supply specifically designed for use with our amplifier modules from the UcD™ and NCORE® families. These power supplies are suitable for mono and stereo setups, as well as multichannel applications.
A Fusion Amp is an aluminum plate that houses a mounted DSP and one, two, or three amplifiers with an integrated power supply. It is designed for use in active loudspeakers and subwoofers, and is also referred to as a plate amplifier.
Our products are intended solely for audio reproduction. Use in any other application is not supported and is at your own risk.
A Class-D amplifier, or switching amplifier, is an electronic amplifier in which the amplifying devices (typically MOSFETs) function as electronic switches, rather than linear gain devices as in other types of amplifiers. These amplifiers operate by rapidly switching between the supply rails, with a modulator using techniques such as pulse width modulation, pulse density modulation, or related methods to encode the audio input into a pulse train. The audio is then passed through a low-pass filter into the loudspeaker, while the high-frequency pulses (which can reach up to 6 MHz) are blocked. Since the output transistor pairs are never conducting simultaneously, there is no alternate path for current flow other than through the low-pass filter and loudspeaker, allowing efficiency to exceed 90%.
In principle, Hypex amplifiers are compatible with any loudspeaker, provided they are correctly matched. Our recommendation is to use an amplifier that is capable of delivering slightly more power than what your speakers require. While it is not necessary to have an extremely powerful amplifier, it is important to select a module that can provide the power your speakers can handle. Using an undersized amplifier may result in it operating at maximum capacity continuously, which can lead to clipping and potentially damage your audio equipment.

Technical support

To drive one of the modules 180 degrees out of phase, simply swap the negative and positive input signal wires. Connect the loudspeaker between both positive loudspeaker outputs of the amplifiers, and place a 100nF/200V capacitor across the loudspeaker terminals on the amplifier side. This setup is most suitable for 8-ohm loads, as each amplifier "sees" 4 ohms when an 8-ohm load is attached. A 4-ohm load may trigger the current protection, limiting the power output to less than expected.
The 400kHz signal observed at the output of the amplifier is a residue of the switching nature of Class D amplifiers. This is completely normal and poses no harm. For more information, please refer to our EMI application note.

The HPR12/HNR12 are voltage regulators similar to the 7812/7912 ICs. The key differences are their wider bandwidth, lower noise, and lower output impedance. Additionally, they feature Kelvin-sense inputs, allowing the creation of a local regulator that does not need to be physically close to the circuit being powered. Typical op-amp based circuits exhibit significantly greater sensitivity to power supply ripple and noise than the DC PSRR values listed in the datasheet would indicate.

Clean power supplies are essential for high-quality audio performance. The noise and rejection specifications of the HxR modules are unparalleled, making them an excellent upgrade for any circuit that uses or requires regulators.
Input sensitivity is determined by the desired output power, the impedance of the speaker, and the gain of the amplifier. Naturally, the desired output power cannot exceed the amplifier's rated maximum. In this example, the input sensitivity for a 400W output at 4 ohms is calculated. The gain and maximum output power are specified in the datasheet. The speaker load depends on the user's application.

Temperature and implementation

Class D amplifiers are highly efficient in terms of power dissipation. If a Class D amplifier were heat-sinked like an equivalent Class AB amplifier, it would remain virtually stone cold. The primary objective is to reduce the heatsink size, making the amplifiers more compact. An idling UcD™ amplifier consumes up to 2% of its rated power—equivalent to 8W for a UcD400 amplifier. Whether this results in a significant temperature rise depends on the size of the heatsink. For further details, please refer to the "Thermal Design" application note.
Amplifiers must always be operated with an appropriate heatsink to prevent overheating. Even the highly efficient UcD700, with 90% efficiency, dissipates up to 70 watts at full power. The simplest solution is to use an all-aluminum enclosure to mount the amplifier. If a steel enclosure is used, a standard aluminum heatsink should be installed inside. Additionally, ensure adequate airflow within the enclosure by incorporating venting holes. For further details, please refer to the "Thermal Design" application note.
Our modules are factory-calibrated to achieve optimal Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) performance rather than to standardize operating current. As a result, operating current may vary within a 20% range. While this may lead to noticeable temperature differences, it is not a cause for concern.

Hypex Filter Designer

For Hypex Filter Designer related questions we have a HFD manual available. The HDF manual can be found at "downloads" and DSP containing product pages.

Fusion Amp Family

Plate amplifiers can be used to quickly and easily convert passive loudspeakers into active ones, or to replace your passive filter design with a digital filter solution.

These amplifiers are commonly used in active loudspeakers, high-power subwoofers, active monitor systems, and public address speakers.

The gain can be trimmed in the HFD software, adjusting the gain and input buffer at the amplifier itselves is not supported.
No, it is not possible to add anything to the Fusion Amp setup, as doing so will void the warranty.
Your Fusion amp is factory programmed, therefor a Fusion Amp cannot be changed afterwards. Adding an extra amplifier will result in a not working channel.
Here you will find some example hardware and software:

Hardware:
  • Dayton EMM-6
  • Focusrite Scarlett Solo
It is important to use an external soundcard with microphone input.
Software:
  • Hypex Filter Design
  • Room EW Wizard software

Out of the box, the Fusion Amp does not function for your safety and to protect your valuable speakers. Since the Fusion Amp’s DSP does not include a filter by default, you will need to start by using HFD. This free software can be downloaded from our website. You can familiarize yourself with the software, even without a Hypex product connected. A comprehensive guide on how to design the filters is available on our website under the "downloads" section.
Open HFD on your PC and connect your PC with the Fusion Amp. Open Filter design and choose “File” -> “New Fusion Amp” if you now choose “load filter to DSP” a unity filter will be uploaded. If you desire a different filter, please refer to the HFD manual.

For optimal performance, the Fusion Amp should be installed in a sealed compartment within your speaker cabinet. The online user guide includes basic installation dimensions. For detailed instructions, refer to the "Installation" chapter. Additionally, 3D models and 2D drawings are available on our website to assist you in designing the amplifier compartment.

In theory, a remote kit can be added to every Fusion Amp. For a stereo setup, 9 out of 10 configurations will be connected as master and slave, where the master provides the data to the slave for audio signals and controls. In this case, it is not necessary to have two remote kits. However, you still have the option to use two remote kits if you wish to have a LED indicator in both speakers to show activity.
All Fusion Amps are designed for mono 1, 2, or 3-way configurations. Stereo use with a single Fusion Amp is not possible. However, it is possible to sum the left and right channels (L+R) in one Fusion Amp, which can be used for applications such as a center speaker in a multi-channel setup.
The USB port at a Fusion Amp can only be used to configure the Fusion Amp DSP. This connection does not support USB audio.
If a mixed setup is created, where one-way models are mixed with multi-way models, the master should be a multi-way model. This is because a mixed configuration may have conflicting inputs (digital vs high-level). In such cases, the one-way models will be muted when a digital source is selected at the master. If this behavior is undesirable, it is recommended to consider using a two-way model in BTL or dual mono configuration for the subwoofer amplifier.
Please download the Hypex Filter Design installation and Hypex FusionAmp Firmware update tutorial at "downloads"
Due to component availability, we were forced to use different hardware on the DSP3-213 (previously called MP-DSP Main). This resulted in two versions of firmware 1.x and 5.x

Please choose the correct update file. To make sure you choose the right file, please read: "READ THIS FIRST" at the download page at any Fusion Amplifier product page.

Switch Mode Power Supplies

You can connect a LED with series resistor to the positive auxiliary output of the SMPS. You can use an online calculator like http://ledcalc.com/ to determine the value for the resistor. Refer to the datasheet of the SMPS for more information.
Yes, depending on the SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply) you are using, you can add a small application. For the maximum ratings and detailed specifications, please refer to the datasheet of the specific SMPS to ensure compatibility and safe operation.
The SMPS3K is intended to power our range of high power amplifier modules, such as UcD2K and NC2K. As a result, this SMPS product does not feature the 2-quadrant operation as most of our other SMPS products do. Therefore, they are unable to handle large reverse currents generated by half-bridge amplifiers operated at low frequencies. For this reason, it is not advisable to use this SMPS to power half bridge amplifiers like our UcD102, UcD180(LP), UcD250LP, UcD400(LP), NC500 and NC1200 modules when used in the frequency range below 100Hz. A workaround for this could be using the half-bridge amplifiers in bridge mode or reversing phase for half of the modules.

Multichannel applications

Hypex products can certainly be used to create a multichannel application. The most important consideration when building a multichannel setup is cooling. If multiple amplifiers and power supplies are mounted in one enclosure, the internal temperature can rise quickly. To prevent overheating, ensure that adequate heatsinks are used, and consider adding active cooling with a fan. It's also important to allow airflow inside the case, even if a fan is not in use. If you need assistance while building a multichannel amplifier with Hypex products, please contact us at sales@hypex.nl.
This is the most important aspect of designing a multichannel amplifier. We are happy to assist you in building a multichannel amplifier with Hypex products. Please contact us at sales@hypex.nl for further guidance.
